- Donate your unwanted items to local charities – clothes, books, and all those mini hotel shampoos you’ve accumulated over the years make great donations!
- Consider leaving furniture behind – while mom and dad’s ’90’s living room set might initially seem like your best option, buying you own furniture upon arrival might actually be cheaper than hiring professionals to move large pieces – especially if you’re moving far away. Plus, this is YOUR new place. You deserve to start fresh.
2. Update your address, early:
Here’s who you should notify before moving:
-
- Post office: this will ensure that mail from your old place is forwarded to your new one for 12 months. Trust us, you def want to do this. Easily update your address online here, and be sure to do it at least a week before your move.
- Electric, cable, & internet providers: How does no internet or electricity sound on your first night in your new place? Seriously, make sure this is all set up beforehand. You’ll thank yourself later.
- Amazon: wouldn’t it be awkward if you One Click ordered toilet paper to your old address? Make sure your shipping & billing address is updated, for all online retailers!
3. Start thinking about layout:
- Whether you’re bringing old furniture or starting from scratch, start thinking about how you want your apartment to look. Your college dorm days are over, and if this is your first adult apartment you’ll want it to look, well, adult. Luckily, there are online design services that can help with this piece, especially if you’re starting a new job and short on time.
4. Pack a moving day bag:
-
- Pack a small bag with essential moving day items: a phone charger, a water bottle, & snacks. Also, a toothbrush is key – you’ll likely be too tired to go digging around for this after a long day!
- Locate your MVP documents (passport, SS card, tax/insurance info, etc.) and add them to this bag, too. This way, you won’t have to worry about losing them in the move.
